Martinez was appointed Atletico Kolkata's fitness coach in July 2014. Right from the start he was given a lot of responsibility over the team and during Kolkata's pre-season training camp in Madrid he drilled the team to shape their fitness. Martinez described his desire to introduce the physical methodology of the European leagues and drew inspiration from Atletico Madrid's methodology.
When it came to the ISL, he highlighted the importance of the Indians to understand that they need to improve to get to the European level.
During the course of the season, Martinez, was praised for his work with Kolkata as the squad was arguably fitter than the rest of the competition, which always a big advantage to any team. Even during the matches one can often notice this man sweating it out with the reserves to keep them ready for the action.
During an encounter against FC Goa in the semi-finals, December 17, Martinez took over the reigns of the Kolkata side after Habas needed treatment for an illness on the sidelines. Kolkata went on to win the game and eventually won the whole ISL.
